Bearsden’s Big Beatson Bash
17th May 2025
The Beatson Charity, based in the Beatson Building next to Gartnavel Hospital is a vital West of Scotland based charity. It not only supports cancer research but also offers direct support to cancer patients through services like their befriending service and the Wellness Centre.

The Wellness Centre, an oasis located on the fourth floor of the Beatson building, provides a calming environment for both inpatients and outpatients. Patients can relax in comfortable seating, enjoy scenic views of the West End, and have a cup of tea and a biscuit or two. The centre also offers games, reading material, and television, making it a welcome escape from the hospital wards. A true sanctuary for many, it is a sanity saver – a chance to come to a normal environment.

Bearsden Ski Club has many members who have benefited from the Beatson’s services and Bearsden’s Big Beatson Bash is a way of saying thank you and helping ensure that these facilities continue for other people.

The BASH - Horse Racing Night
The event begins at 7 PM.

There will be a limit on tickets to allow you move about during the evening. Tickets will be £5 ? and will include a FREE glass of prosecco. Buy here or at the ski club office.

Over the evening there will be 8 races each with 8 runners. Before each race we will introduce each runner and allow you to use your best skill and judgement(!) to pick the winner. You will have a chance to bet on your chosen runner. We will then play the film and the lucky punters can collect their winnings - 50% of the pot!
In addition to betting, attendees can support the event beforehand by:
-
Sponsoring a race (e.g., The A for Audi Canter). Individuals or businesses can pay a sponsorship fee to have their name or brand associated with one of the horse races. The sponsor’s name will be displayed prominently on the race card, announced before the race, and could even appear on event materials or banners. Sponsors get recognition during the event, which is great for local businesses looking for exposure. As a bonus, sponsors might be invited to present prizes for the race they sponsor.
-
Owning a horse for a £10 donation (you can rename the horse). Attendees can "buy" a horse for a race, which lets them rename it (e.g., Lucky Charm). There are 8 horses per race, so the first 8 participants for each race get the naming rights. If their horse wins, the "owner" gets a prize (e.g., a bottle of champagne, or a small trophy). It adds a fun, personal touch to the event, with their horse’s name called out during the race.
-
Training a horse for a smaller £5 fee, participants can "train" a horse. This means their name will be listed as the trainer on the race card, giving them partial involvement in the event. If their horse wins, the trainer also wins a prize (something small, like a voucher or a celebratory gift).
There will be a prize for the winning owner and trainer in the first three races, with a 1-in-8 chance of winning. Each race will have 8 horses, so every "owner" and "trainer" has a 1-in-8 chance of winning a prize for that specific race. After the race film is played and the winner is revealed, the owner and trainer of the winning horse receive their prizes.

Sponsoring a Race:
-
Practical Execution: A form on the website or event page could allow people to sponsor a race. Once payment is received, they would be asked to submit their preferred race name.
-
-
Owning a Horse:
-
Practical Execution: The website would allow people to choose a race and horse (on a first-come, first-served basis) for £10. Once payment is completed, they would receive a confirmation email asking for their preferred horse name. This name would then appear on the race card.
-
-
Training a Horse:
-
Practical Execution: Similarly, the website could have an option to "train" a horse. Once payment is processed, the trainer’s name is associated with a horse. This could be a fun, low-cost way for more people to get involved, without the higher price tag of horse ownership.

How the 1-in-8 Chance of Winning Works:
Website/Practical Considerations:
-
Interactive Forms: The website would need a simple form for each category (sponsorship, ownership, and training). After filling out the form, the user would be prompted to pay and confirm their entry.
-
Automated Confirmation: Once a participant sponsors a race, owns, or trains a horse, an automated system could generate a confirmation email with further instructions (e.g., choosing horse names, etc.).
-
Limited Slots: Since there are only 8 horses per race and a fixed number of races, the website would display availability in real-time, indicating which races or horses are still open for naming/training.
This setup provides multiple levels of involvement, from large sponsorships to smaller donations, ensuring that more people can engage with the event while contributing to a good cause.
